U dokumentarcu Bob Villson režira „Život i smrt Marine Abramović“ vidimo kako slavna umetnica igra svoju majku, razrešavajući time sopstvene konflikte iz detinjstva i adolescencije. U filmu Iza brda, kanski laureat Kristijan Munđiju pričom o egzorcizmu rumunsku stvarnost pretače u fikciju, a njegova fikcija opet postaje stvarnost – u zemlji Srbiji, ovoga leta...

Between to be and not to be
A gap, no men’s land, half existence, hybrid form – all these figures mark the 18th Auteur Film Festival. In brother Traviani’s Caesar must die, they filmed convicts of a roman prison who are preparing a play, Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and recognizing the drama of their own existence in the fiction written long time ago. And the magic of Ulrich Seidl film (Paradise: Love and Paradise: Faith) come from the fact that you cannot see the document from fiction, nor acting from life. In the documentary Bob Wilson’s Life and death of Marina Abramovic, we can see the famous artist play her own mother, and though that resolving her own childhood and adolescent conflicts. With a story about exorcism, in Beyond the hills, Cannes laureate Cristian Mungiu turns Romanian reality into fiction and then his fiction becomes reality again – in Serbia, this summer…
The position of the in between, the half existence subject only to the laws of paradoxical logic, characterize the Auteur Film festival since its establishment, in 1994. Between the “cult event for film lovers in Belgrade” and “phantom festival”, as one critic called it; between “manifestation of national importance” and manifestation whose existence is under the question mark every year – the Auteur Film Festival has built its recognizable image and audience. “Make your every movie like it’s your last” – is one of the memorable Berman’s commands for authors – and the Festival adheres to that, consistently, throughout its history.
After all, a festival that hasn’t got enough means to print a catalogue, accepts to half exist: over ten years you have needed a signature of living witnesses to prove that you had a brilliant program once. It is similar to heroes of those Greek myths who spend summers on Earth, and winters in Hades; now you see him, now you don’t.
I am convinced that, under modest condition to survive, the Auteur Film Festival will have an ever-expanding audience in years to come. In the wolf times, the time of crisis and hopelessness, a man survives mainly due to the will of meaning. And that meaning, though seemingly hidden, is preserved in the works of art, auteur film and true art in general.
